  • Floristic Survey on Seaweed at Cape Kattoshi

This is a floristic survey on seaweed conducted by the Laboratory of Seaweed, Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University. Warm-water and cold-water seaweeds grow along the coast of Hakodate in an environment where the Tsugaru Warm Current and the Oyashio Current mix. Our goal is to reveal recent environmental changes by comparison with previous records, besides making a record of current vegetation. In addition, since species identification is an essential basic knowledge for applied science, you will participate in floristic surveys in addition to your own research once you join our laboratory.

    Field work

Monthly floristic survey on seaweed conducted by Laboratory of Seaweed in Faculty of Fisheries Sciences, Hokkaido University.

    We are studying seaweed vegetation.
During October to March, we visit the Cape at night because of the timing of lowest tide.

    Lab work

After the collection, the seaweeds are identified and preserved as dry herbarium in laboratory.

    2  13  14  SDGs top

By regularly monitoring the species composition of seaweeds growing for a long period of time, changes in the environment can be predicted. There are approximately 1,800 species of seaweeds in Japan, but only a few dozen of them is currently being used. Investigating seaweed vegetation may lead to the development of unused resources. We would like to contribute to the SDGs by protecting the richness of the oceans and enabling a sustainable food supply.
