Section outline

    • Prof. Onishi's Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Division of Marine Bioresource and Environmental Science

    • Professor ONISHI retired from Hokkaido University in March 2026.

    • Atmosphere and ocean, they are fluids on the earth surface. They have many same points and some different, and influence deeply each other.

    • The water mass turnovers seasonally, then the environment changes dynamically.

Slight differences in temperature, currents, winds, etc., in each season and year will change the environment of the Bay.

    • In seasonal variation…

Monsoonal wind transports the water into or out of the Gulf, which changes the water level and flow pattern in the Gulf.

      In interannual variation…

Positive Dipole Mode of Indian Ocean prompts strong SW monsoon over the Gulf, which makes huge outflow and promotes estuarine type water exchange through the Gulf mouth.
