  •    In March 2021, observation on ice was conducted in Lake Saroma in Hokkaido. Lake Saroma is a saltwater lake that is directly connected to the ocean. This place is well known to sea ice researcher as a place where sea ice observation can be done easily. It is much easier than going to the Arctic or Antarctic oceans. In Lake Saroma, we conducted tests of sea ice observation in the Arctic. The tests were to examine the methods of environmental DNA sampling in order to study the biodiversity of the Arctic Ocean. We tried several water sampling methods (e.g., lowering a water sampling bottle with a rope, lowering a hose, and pumping by hands). The video also contains an explanation of basic knowledge about environmental DNA (by Dr. KAWAKAMI Tatsuya, a postdoctoral researcher at Hokkaido University).

    The leader of the Lake Saroma field campaign was Dr. Nomura at the Field Science Center for Northern Biosphere, Hokkaido University. I, Umezawa, also participated in the observation as a member of Dr. Nomura's team.

       This is a study of the biodiversity of the Arctic Ocean. In the Arctic, the effects of global warming are becoming more and more apparent. Water from the Pacific Ocean is flowing into the Arctic Ocean from the Bering Strait. As the Arctic Ocean warms, fish from the Pacific Ocean may move into the Arctic Ocean. Such a trend has already been observed in zooplankton communities (See LASBOS Moodle page by Dr. Matsuno). It is important to investigate how biodiversity changes with climate change. The purpose of this study is to investigate the biodiversity of the Arctic using environmental DNA. Through this, I would like to contribute to SDG 14 LIFE BELOW WATER.
