"Resource survey of walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) on T/S Ushio-maru"
In April-May, large-sized and pelagic larvae of walleye pollock are collected by oblique towing with an FMT-net, and a survey is conducted to elucidate the annual fluctuation of growth rate based on water temperature and prey abundance.
As well as the egg and larval surveys from December to March, this project is used for stock prediction projects and practical training for undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences.
The survival rate of eggs, larvae and juveniles has a significant impact on the quantity of fishery resources. To continue fishing, we need to know this accurately. This video material will show how to collect fish eggs, larvae and pelagic juveniles. I would like to contribute to the SDGs (2 ZERO HUNGER and 14 LIFE BELOW WATER) by letting people around the world know about it.
The United Nations has designated the decade starting in 2021 as the "Decade of Ocean Science," with the aim of contributing to SDGs. Ocean science, as defined by the UN, includes the field of fisheries.
