SONAR stands for sound navigation and ranging, and refers to equipment that uses sound waves to detect underwater objects and the seafloor. Fish finders and scanning sonar are collectively called "sonar". However, in the field of acoustic surveys, "(quantitative) echo sounder" refers to equipment that detects only in the direction directly below the ship, while "sonar" often refers to equipment that detects in a direction other than directly below (horizontally or depression of X°).
