It is important to make marine observation a routine work and maintain a certain level of quality. Therefore, each organization has a variety of etiquette rules when conducting ocean observations. The representative players of ``Manners'' are dissolved oxygen measurement and ``Clean Technique.'' As for DO water sampling, as long as you have mastered the basics mentioned above, you can handle DO water sampling on almost any observation vessel. Once you understand the basic techniques and principles, following the etiquette is not that difficult.

The strictest etiquette in Japan is probably the one at Marine Works, which is responsible for observation work on the JAMSTEC research vessel. (Strictly following international standards)

First, we check each Niskin water sampler for leaks, and then start collecting water. When the water sampler shouts "Niskin, no leaks!" (Niskin No. 12, no leaks), the supervisor repeats "No leaks!" and records it. When the water sampler shouts, ``Bottle number 11, water temperature 1.2℃'' (DO bottle number 11, water temperature 1.2℃), the supervisor repeats the same and records it.

(Many of the etiquette rules are to ensure safety on board the ship, so be sure to follow them properly.)

By the way, I (Oki) don't feel like I'm used to ocean observation = a veteran, even when I look at it from the outside. (As expected, I may look like an expert on a training cruise with complete beginner students, but...) Even though I have done ocean observation quite a few times. Mr. K of Tohoku Fisheries Research Institute (≠Hokkaido University Fisheries) said something similar. I met K-san on the boat the other day, and we both looked at each other and agreed. When I'm on a boat, I spend a lot of time wandering around and making unnecessary movements, and when I have someone else to rely on, I tend to rely on them. On the other hand, the oceanographers who graduated from Hokkaido University's Faculty of Fisheries have an amazing sense of being accustomed to ocean observation. Even the graduate students in the Faculty of Fisheries are quite experienced. My goal is to train such reliable veteran oceanographers, and I myself have always wanted to have fun doing ship observations. Hello everyone.
