Basic On-board Training of Fisheries Sciences

This is a 4-day/3-night training course aboard the training ship Oshoro-Maru. Students become accustomed to shipboard life and learn the basics of ocean observation and fishery resource surveys. It is also an opportunity to get to know your peers in the department. Below is a picture of the 2019 basic on-board training of fisheries sciences for the Department of Marine Biology.

    • Field Training on Board(May of the 3rd year)

The Oshoro-Maru will go to the Pacific Ocean, off the eastern coast. We will conduct drift nets for salmon trout, oceanographic observations, etc.

    • Shipboard Training(September or October of the 3rd year)

・Landing trawl in Hidaka Bay: deep-sea fish sorting and fish classification.。
・Juvenile netting in Hidaka Bay and off the east coast of Hokkaido: Collecting juvenile fish, which are important as a food resource, and examining the characteristics of each location.
・Plankton nets in Hidaka Bay and off the east coast of Hokkaido: Investigate the diurnal vertical migration of zooplankton.
・Oceanographic observations in Hidaka Bay: Vertical oceanographic structure (water temperature and salinity), dissolved oxygen measurements by vertical water sampling, and seafloor sediment sampling (may not be conducted)
・Off Erimo-oki to Off the east coast of Hokkaido: Visual observation of marine mammals
・Off Erimo-Oki to Off the east coast of Hokkaido: Visual observation of seabirds

These are just a few of the many exciting hands-on activities. The schedule is tight, so please be punctual. There will be an onboard report and a report after disembarkation.
