One liter of water is collected with a
plastic bucket for surface samples and with a Niskin or Van Dorn water sampler
for subsurface samples.
The water sample is fixed with
glutaraldehyde at a final concentration of 1%.
Fixed samples are stored in a cool, dark
place, shielded from light. It is recommended to store in a refrigerator.
