During research of fish specimens in Hokkaido University, a single specimen collected from the South China Sea and having different morphology from other known species was discovered. It has slightly larger eyes (orbit) and

narrower interorbit.

After examination of many specimens loaned from other institutions, it was revealed that the specimen differs from G. scaber, the most similar species to it, in the orbital diameter and interorbital width. Because it was also found that scientific names applicable to the species are absent, it was described as a new species, Grammoplites knappi, in 1996.
