    •  The Oshoro Maru No. 5, which entered service in 2014, was built with the goals of providing highly specialized training voyages to train researchers and technicians in oceanography and fisheries science, and of responding to diverse research needs from within and outside the university. To achieve these goals, the Oshoro-maru Marine Science Department:OMSD was established in 2010 as a fourth department in addition to the Deck Department, Engine Department, and Administrative Department, as shown in the organizational chart of the Oshoro Maru in Figure 1.

    • Since its establishment, the OMSD has maintained and managed the advanced research and survey facilities on newly built vessels, and has planned and implemented various training programs using these facilities, contributing greatly to education, research, and survey activities. In addition, the department plays a leading role in continuous monitoring surveys commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment and the Fisheries Agency, and based on research and cooperation agreements with the National Institute for Environmental Studies (Ministry of the Environment).

The OMSD currently has three members. During training voyages, we provide lectures on oceanographic observation and research techniques and onboard seawater analysis to trainees on board. The Oshoro Maru also provides support for cutting-edge oceanographic observation technology on research cruises that often include researchers and faculty members from inside and outside the university. While the Oshoro Maru is at the dedicated wharf in Hakodate, we maintain the observation instruments and equipment, prepare the equipment for the next voyage, and act as a bridge and liaison between the passengers and the ship's operators (Figure 2) so that the vessel can fulfill its role as an educational and research platform.

    • The acronym "OMSD" stands for "Oshoro-maru Marine Science Department" and is therefore called "O-Mu-Su-Do" by outside researchers. (The name was given by Dr. Kenshi Kuma: former professor of the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences)
