This section introduces the process of collecting mud (sediment) from the seafloor during oceanographic observations in Funka Bay, Hokkaido.
This is what the seafloor of Funka Bay looks like.
On the way to the observation site (Funka Bay Station No. 30), a bottom sampler is set up. Mud (sediment) from the seafloor is collected, and the mud sampling tube is removed.
The water directly above the sediment is collected.
A columnar (core) sample of the sediment is cut by 1 cm thick from the surface.
Water (pore water) in the sediment is aspirated.
