Dulse
Scientific name: Palmaria palmata
It is a boreal red alga that is distributed in Hokkaido and the Pacific coast of northern Honshu, and grows on rocks in the lower intertidal zone to the apical zone. It blooms from December to April. The leaves are wedge-shaped, fan-shaped, and pinnately branched. The leaves are membranous to leathery, bright to dark red, and 5-30 cm long. There are macroscopic tetrasporophytes and male gametophytes, and microscopic female gametophytes, showing atypical alternation of generations. It contains a lot of phycoerythrin, a red protein pigment, and is attracting attention for its antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory effects. In Europe and the United States, it is added to salads and soups.
