Before calculating the pH of seawater, as a preparatory exercise, we determine the pH of rainwater (in equilibrium with atmospheric CO2).
Have you ever heard of "acid rain"? Rainwater is acidic in nature because it contains carbonic acid.
Rain with a pH lower than the pH of the original rainwater (the pH we calculate in this problem) is called acid rain. Keep this in mind as it is a basic in environmental chemistry.
