Since phytoplankton lives by drifting in seawater, its particle density is similar to that of seawater. Its plankton particles may have sufficient sedimentation rate to form a swarm. Then they leave the mixed layer and reach the pycnocline below it. It is believed that many particles cannot cross the pycnocline.
