Since phytoplankton lives by drifting in seawater, its particle density is similar to that of seawater. Its plankton particles may have sufficient sedimentation rate to form a swarm. Then they leave the mixed layer and reach the pycnocline below it. It is believed that many particles cannot cross the pycnocline.

In nautical terms, there is a term called "ballast". Ballast (weighted) water is added to the tanks as a weight to keep the ship from floating too much. The effect of weighing down fluffy floating particles and causing them to sediment is called the "ballast effect".

At the end of the class, I was asked if (to the effect that) there is a "velocity that separates sedimentation from flotation". It is a difficult question.
It depends on how long a time scale of natural phenomena you are considering. I think it depends on the time scale.
