    • Because plankton is defined as "not swimming against flow, but drifting," it includes viruses in the small, and ethizen jellyfish in the large, and ranges in size from 1 to 10,000 times. They are also diverse as taxa and include heterotrophic bacteria, plants and animals, each with different roles within ecosystems. Many nectons also live as planktons in eggs and larvae.
