Every year 600 million cases of foodborne illnesses are reported. In 2010, 420,000 people died from diseases such as salmonella and E. coli infection, a third of whom were children under the age of five. It is estimated that this figure is increasing year after year (WHO website). To address this problem, countries need to measure the burden of food-borne illnesses, establish food safety systems, improve water quality, and spread these around the world.
